When I tell people I’m part of the financial independence community, I get some funny looks.

Different for Everyone

That’s the beauty of financial independence.
Everyone’s definition is different.

At its core, it’s the ability to do:

• what you like,

• when you like, and

• with whom you like

If you choose to work, it’s because you want to - not because you have to.

Chores Still

Let me be clear. There will always be elements of your life you won’t love:

• errands to run,

• groceries to get,

• meals to prep

You can’t stop taking out the trash just because no longer go to work every day.

Retirement Is a Version

May people think of financial independence as retirement.
However, that word conjures up images of a life of leisure.

There’s only so much bridge and golf many of us can play.
Shuffleboard and Bingo aren’t yet fulfilling.

Life After Financial Independence

What people do when they no longer have to work can be amazing.

They might:

• teach English to immigrants,

• explore Europe,

• mentor former coworkers,

• train for a triathlon,

• volunteer in local events,

• start a nonprofit,

• shift to a less stressful career,

• found a business, etc.
